Essex Grand and Provincial Grand Officers Mess
You will recall that we recently took a survey on the Provincial Officers Mess asking questions as to its location, venue and format and whether participants had any particular comments. The PGM is keen to seek your views on as many subjects as possible and working with you to ensure our Province remains fully engaged with the membership.
Traditionally, the Mess, which takes place in September each year, has recently been held at Saxon Hall due to the numbers attending. The last meeting, however, took place at the Benton Hall Golf Club in Witham; the first time it has been held at a
non-masonic venue in recent times. It was very well attended and enjoyed by those present.
Following that meeting, the recent survey was commissioned and we can now give a precis of the results.
The first question was “Have you previously attend the Mess”
Of those that responded, the majority responded “yes” and that they “would attend again” the results of the remaining
Secondly was “How important is location”
Of those that responded, an overwhelming majority replied they “would attend irrespective of where it is held”. Further
questioned as to whether they felt it should be a Masonic Venue, "84% said that it did not".
Although attendance has been high at Saxon Hall, it is clear that this venue presents travelling difficulties to members from some parts of our Province.
When asked if we should accept a potential lower attendance but move around the Province, there was a clear majority in favour of changing venues in favour of making attendance for others as viable as possible and accepting a potential reduction in absolute numbers. .
There were also a number of innovative suggestions as to potential content ranging from:
"Perhaps a short talk from a representative of a local charity the Province are supporting"
To: "A small number of innovative awards for Brethren who have done something special in the past year. The most travelled; most meetings; charitable work, outstanding ritual. Wooden spoon(mallet?) for the 'faux pas' of the year."
To that end, the Provincial Grand Master and his executive will be looking at where best to host this years’ Mess and, as such, it is expected that the announcement of this year’s venue will be made at the PGL meeting in May.
